Mirror grinding - Telescope making

My favorite method is to grind with the chordal stroke a bit deeper (0.2-0.3 mm on this mirror size) than the target saggita , then use TOT until end of grinding. This saves a lot of grit! As you might noticed by now, much of the grit is wasted as it falls in the space between the tiles.

30/05/2014  This is how you make a telescope mirror out of a hunk of glass: Use a sand mixture and another piece of glass to grind away the middle of a concave shape. Repeat with finer and finer grit sand. Dave Barosso demonstrates the technique, but to do it yourself, try to visit one of the Telescope Makers Workshop‘s classes on Friday nights in Oakland.

Learning to take accurate knife edge readings takes some time Start with the edge . then check the center.Use a ronchi to see how the correction is .You can get a mirror

18/09/2010  To produce a spherical mirror it is easiest to make a tool the same size as the mirror blank and grind with a progressively finer series of abrasives. I will be describing this in due course. Ordinary plate glass is quite good enough for mirrors upto about 14 inches in diameter, bigger than this and the thickness becomes a problem (plate glass is only available in thicknesses upto 25mm). Mirror Grinding Machine

My Mirror Grinding Machine. For a long time I've wanted to build a machine for grinding telescope mirrors. Dennis Rech's M-o-M designs finally inspired me to just get up and do it. Over the years, I'd been collecting motors, gear boxes, pulleys, etc. Most of them came from industrial junk yards. To use these parts, I had to modify some of Dennis' plans. How I did it is described below. This machine is the result. It is capable of grinding up to 20" telescope

When it stops making lots of noise, splash it off and start it again.

Most amateur mirrors in the 16"-plus size range from this problem - but it often goes unnoticed ...
